A Continuation of Our Commitment

At Kenya’s coast, mangrove wetlands contribute to the national economy, store carbon emissions, protect against soil erosion, mitigate storm surges and support the livelihoods of coastal communities. Despite all these benefits, the mangrove forests have been declining due to exploitation for wood, land clearance, port development and oil spills. There is therefore a need to continually restore lost mangroves and sustainably manage the existing forests.

Such efforts begin with creating awareness among stakeholders, as was done at the colorful World Wetlands Day celebration in Mtwapa where key speakers explained how mangrove forests can be restored and preserved.

Apart from the awareness created, many school children participated in the beach cleanup, while youths and faith based groups networked, learnt how to plant mangrove seedlings and brainstormed on how value can be added to mangroves in entrepreneurial ventures.

Key speakers included faith leaders, government representatives, youth representatives, and women and community leaders from the Coast. .
